ELSHAM
Small it may be, but Elsham could never be described as a rural backwater.
For this small Northern Lincolnshire community which lies near the M180 a few miles north of Brigg, boasts one of the area’s finest golf courses as well as the impressive Elsham Hall which over the year attracts hundreds of visitors.
The village has a long history, being first mentioned in documents dating back to about 1086, and was for a period the home of a priory occupied by Austin canons.
For many years the village was neighbour to RAF Elsham Wolds which in World War 1 was the base for 33 Squadron which operated there from December 1916 until June 1919.
The Second World War saw Elsham in the role of a heavy bomber station of No 1 Group.

Today there is little evidence of the village’s link with the RAF, the site being used for agriculture and industry.
For 100 days a year Elsham is a popular tourist destination with visitors from across the region visiting its 18th Century hall, the building undergoing extensive renovation in the 1930s and opening as Elsham Hall Country and Wildlife Park in 1979.
The hall takes pride in promoting enjoyment of the countryside and wildlife and an appreciation of the arts and rural crafts and has superb lakeside gardens founded in 1970 to encourage a wider understanding of natural history, the arts and rural crafts.
Also found here are a magnificent walled garden on a four acres site, sensory garden, aviaries and carp and trout lakes. For details of opening times click on the link below.
A very different attraction at Elsham is to be found at Moor Farm, which has been voted the best paintball site in the United Kingdom.
A more genteel sport is golf and Elsham is held in high regard by lovers of the game being established in 1900 and providing a tranquil, well wooded course with an abundance of wildlife.
