Hull proudly describes itself as a great British city. And it is.
This fast growing port, a true gateway to Europe and the world, is undergoing major regeneration with multi-million pound developments bringing new life to many of its best known areas.
Superb shopping facilities have been enhanced by the opening of the £200-million city centre St Stephen’s development. Expansion plans are also active for the renowned Princes Quay shopping centre, which stands on the site of a former dock.
Hull offers wide ranging leisure activities – historic public houses, ultra-modern night clubs, and a state of the art marina which attracts ocean going craft from around the world being among them.
Culturally, Hull has much to offer. The City Hall is a majestic setting for concerts by some of the world’s leading musicians. Hull New Theatre presents plays and musicals by national and local theatre groups and the Hull Truck Theatre brings to the stage world premiere productions from leading writers including locally based John Godber, one of the most performed writers in the English language.
A major tourist attraction which has been seen by well over one million visitors is The Deep which gives a unique glimpse into life in the oceans of the world. And Hull’s museums, too, attract considerable interest from visitors. They include the Streetlife Museum with its exhibits of transport in bygone days, the acclaimed East Riding Museum which displays beautiful Roman mosaics and the Maritime Museum which has fascinating display of artefacts from Hull’s great days as a whaling port.
A major attraction for many visitors is Wilberforce House in the city’s historic High Street with its exhibitions celebrating the life of the local man who played the key role in the abolition of slavery.
Three professional sports teams are enthusiastically supported. The recently opened £45-million KC Stadium is home to Championship team Hull City and RL Superleague club Hull FC. Across the city Hull Kingston Rovers, another Superleague Club, has its HQ in the modern Craven Park.
A university city – it has been voted the UK's most 'friendly university' - Hull plays host to visitors from around the world, over one million every year arriving through the daily ferry links to Rotterdam and Zeebrugge.
