For years York has taken pride in being one of the leading tourist destinations in England. It’s a fact which reflects the role the city has played over 2,000 years in the nation’s story.

Walk round York and you walk through time, as do over one million people a year who stroll around its two and three quarter miles of ancient walls – the longest in England.

Many of today’s streets follow the course of Roman ones, and the architecturally acclaimed Minster, one of the most visited buildings in England and reflects centuries of tradition and craftsmenship with a history dating back to 627.

Museums include the National Railway Museum, Jorvik, York Castle Museum and Yorkshire Museum.

Jorvik has become a major attraction with over 14 million visitors since it opened 21 years ago. Visitors journey through reconstructed Viking-Age streets as they would have been in the year AD 975.

A superb free attraction is the National Railway Museum, the largest railway museum in the world.
But there’s more to York than history.

The modern city is a shoppers’ paradise. Major chain stores sit alongside curiosity shops and stylish boutiques and antiques shops. Shopping streets include the world famous Shambles first mentioned in the Domesday book 900 years ago and said to be Europe's most visited street.

York abounds with cafes, restaurants offering dishes from around the world and historic public houses, making the city a vibrant centre truly living up to its reputation as Yorkshire’s capital city.

Getting there:
From the Humber Bridge continue straight ahead and follow signs to Beverley (A164).
After seven miles take left turn to by-pass Beverley and follow signs to York via Market Weighton (A1079).
On arrival parking is available at Grimston Bar park and ride
